Oyster Festival: Celebrating the Louisiana Gulf Oyster

You can’t go far in New Orleans without seeing or hearing the word OYSTER. A staple in any New Orleanian’s diet is the Louisiana Gulf Oyster. In fact, the New Orleans French Quarter has been labeled the “Oyster Capital of America”.


What’s so great about oysters, you ask? Once they are shucked, oysters can be prepared a wide variety of ways: raw, fried, chargrilled, stewed, Rockefellered, and Bienvilled to name a few. Gulf oysters are such a wonderful treat that in typical New Orleans fashion, an Oyster Festival was created.


This year, Oyster Festival, June 3-4, will feature food vendors from around the city including Acme Oyster House, Creole House Restaurant & Oyster Bar, Luke, Andrea’s, Drago’s, Bourbon House, Oceana, Red Fish Grill, Antoine’s and many more.


Of course, what is a festival without some sort of music? Musical acts such as Bonerama, Flow Tribe, and Brass-A-Holics will entertain as guests enjoy the magical culinary creations throughout the fest. Probably the most popular portion of the festival, the P&J Oyster Shucking Contest begins on Saturday at noon. That is a spectacle that you won’t want to miss.
